Latinx Heritage Month is an annual celebration of the history and culture of Latinx communities within the United States from September 15 through October 15. This occasion began as a commemorative week to celebrate and recognize the contributions the Latinx community has provided to America’s history. In 1968, Congress passed a law which authorized President Lyndon B. Johnson to issue an annual proclamation declaring September 15 and September 16 to mark the beginning of National Hispanic Heritage Week. In 1988, President Ronald Regan then extended National Hispanic Heritage Week to a full month from September 15 through October 15.Some may find it odd that Latinx Heritage Month extends across two months. However, September 15 is a significant and fortuitous day as five countries (Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua) declared independence from Spain. Additionally, September 16, is the day Mexico declared independence from Spain rather than what many believe to be May 5th.Latinx Heritage Month is a time to recognize the impactful contributions and influence Latinx people have had on our country, examples of which include Roberto Clemente, the first Latinx player to be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame, and Dr. Ellen Ochoa, the first Latinx female astronaut in NASA. With contributions such as theirs as well as those of so many more, the Latinx community has clearly left a mark on US history.Ranked among the top 100 law firms for diversity by Chicago Lawyer magazine in 2018 and 2019, our firm understands that our diverse and talented attorneys are one of our client’s greatest assets. Schiller DuCanto & Fleck is proud to pay tribute to the generations of Latinx Americans who have positively influenced and enriched the United States.
